New 114-page<\/strong> Used Car Industry Report <\/strong>
to be released Monday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Independent used vehicle dealers sold 9.8 million vehicles in 2025, nearing 2020 total sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total sales research is one of the many data points compiled for NIADA\u2019s Used Car Industry Report<\/em>, which will be released Monday at niada.com\/ucir. The new report features more than 100 pages of industry data, including detailed reports on the dealer landscape in each state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very excited about bringing the UCIR back. It\u2019s full of great data for the independent automobile dealer and will be the benchmark for data for the industry,\u201d said NIADA President Don Griffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be a great tool for dealers to explain the contributions they make to communities across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The UCIR research found sales for independent dealers grew by more than 200,000 from 2024\u2019s 9.7 million. It was the third straight year for sales to grow. Sales still slightly lag behind 2020 and 2021, which included more than 10 million transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Total used sales for 2025 were an estimated 38.6 million, an increase of 1.3 million from 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding buy here, pay here, the deep subprime and subprime risk segments accounted for 34 percent of all independent dealer originations. The report also found that BHPH\/ other category claimed a 32.6 percent share of financing \u2013 a larger share than banks, credit unions or finance companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the association took on the task of defining an \u201cactive used car dealer,\u201d and attempting to estimate the U.S. population of such dealers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were interested in getting away from the total independent dealer licensee count, which can be misleading, and moving toward identifying those operators that are actually moving the metal,\u201d said Danny Langfield, NIADA Director of Strategic Initiatives. \u201cI think a lot of folks will be somewhat surprised with our findings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UCIR will be available to download for free by members through March 31, after which normal pricing will apply ($225 for members, $450 for non-members).
