{"id":6982,"date":"2026-03-18T14:55:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T19:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/niada.com\/dashboard\/?p=6982"},"modified":"2026-03-18T14:55:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T19:55:41","slug":"dealers-approach-to-recon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/niada.com\/dashboard\/dealers-approach-to-recon\/","title":{"rendered":"Dealers&#8217; approach to recon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to address to control costs, keep vehicles safe, driveable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the March issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/digitaleditions.walsworth.com\/publication\/?i=861862&amp;p=16&amp;view=issueViewer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCD<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controlling reconditioning costs and making sure the proper repairs are made to keep the vehicle running and the customer paying is a constant balancing act for dealers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a recent 20 Group meeting, BHPH dealers discussed their process, including answering the top reconditioning item that is addressed on every vehicle that comes in from auction, repossession or on trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It starts with making sure the vehicle is safe, with glaring safety issues being addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe look for drivability. We don\u2019t want it coming back the next day or week,\u201d said Robert Ogle of Armor Auto Sales in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ali Supariwala of Georgia Auto Gallery in Liburn, Georgia, utilizes a checklist and test drive of vehicles to identify issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tell them to be a customer and don\u2019t be a mechanic,\u201d Supariwala said about the test drive during reconditioning. \u201cOur inspection takes about 45 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said his average recon cost is $400 on the vehicles he acquires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supariwala and Chris Pollock of Cherokee Auto Sales in Knoxville, Tennessee, agreed that fluids must be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fluids are a disaster waiting to happen,\u201d Supariwala said. \u201cWe do a fresh oil change because we don\u2019t know when it was last done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pollock explained that every vehicle receives an oil change with a full synthetic blend and a new oil filter. The cost is approximately $20 per vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pollock also inspects the tires and brake pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s $20 for a set of pads. Ten years ago, we didn\u2019t look at the brake pads. It\u2019s bad business.
