More than 300,000 EVs are expected to return from lease in 2026, an increase of more than 200% from the roughly 123,000 units that came back in 2025. The surge stems from heavy EV leasing activity in 2022 and 2023, when federal and state incentives sharply reduced monthly payments.

Leases written during that period assumed residual values near 50%, but actual residuals are closer to 35% to 40%, pushing more vehicles into wholesale channels as lessees walk away rather than buy out their contracts. Used EV wholesale values are already up 7.9% year-over-year, outpacing every other vehicle segment, while retail days’ supply has fallen to 38 days. Most returning units are 2022-2023 models with roughly 25,000 miles and substantial factory and battery warranty coverage remaining, making many strong candidates for certified pre-owned programs.

Why it matters for dealers: This wave is unusually predictable — most of these vehicles are already on the road, under lease, with a known return date. That gives dealers a rare planning window to build EV remarketing know-how, reconditioning workflows, and pricing confidence ahead of time, rather than reacting once the inventory floods the lanes.

For independent dealers, the used-vehicle mix is shifting fast, and electric vehicles are a growing part of it.…

[3,11

post-7472","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-industry","category-inventory-floor-planning","cs-entry","cs-video-wrap
["GET
