For used car dealers, verifying a vehicle’s flood history isn’t just good practice, it’s protection against liability, lost trust, and costly comebacks. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) is warning that an estimated 530,000 flood-damaged vehicles are currently on U.S. roads, many of which have re-entered the resale market with hidden electrical, safety, and mechanical damage masked by fresh paint and cosmetic repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NICB President and CEO David J. Glawe says flood vehicles often look fine on the surface but can carry defects that surface months or years later, long after a sale closes. The organization’s free VINCheck service, originally developed following Hurricane Katrina, has processed nearly 3 million vehicle checks as of July 31, 2026, drawing on data from insurance carriers representing more than 92% of the U.S. market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NICB recommends pulling a complete vehicle history report, having any used vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic, and watching for warning signs such as musty odors, water stains, rust, silt, or mud in hard-to-reach areas. Data cited by NICB, sourced from CARFAX estimates, shows how easily flood titles can be obscured before resale, making VINCheck a useful screening step for dealers evaluating trade-ins and acquired inventory.<\/p>\n
