Amazon is making a serious move into automotive retail — and dealers are paying attention.

The company’s Amazon Autos service, which launched with Hyundai in late 2024, has expanded to include Chevrolet, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, and Subaru, and is now active in more than 130 U.S. cities. The platform allows shoppers to browse inventory, secure financing, and complete most paperwork online before picking up their vehicle at a participating dealership.

Amazon Autos operates on a marketplace model with fixed, haggle-free pricing, integrating traditional dealership operations with Amazon’s familiar digital purchasing experience. Importantly, Amazon stresses that it does not sell cars directly — it facilitates the sales, which are made by the dealership.

Despite the growth, adoption remains uneven, with some dealers reporting slow traction and logistical challenges tied to financing, compliance, and delivery coordination.

For independent dealers, the expansion is worth watching closely. Amazon’s reach and brand trust — particularly among younger buyers — could reshape how consumers begin their car-buying journey, whether dealers are on the platform or not.
