For used car dealers, knowing which models hold up for buyers after the sale is critical: it means more repeat business and fewer costly service comebacks. New reliability rankings from Carfax offer a dealer-relevant data point: smaller, less complex vehicles are proving more dependable than their larger, tech-heavy counterparts.
Carfax’s analysis draws on more than 177,000 data sources and billions of vehicle records to evaluate 2019-2023 model year vehicles, tracking documented repair histories to calculate the likelihood of unexpected repairs. The results show clear top performers in each segment. Among cars, the Kia Rio, Mitsubishi Mirage G4 and Toyota Camry recorded roughly a 2% chance of unexpected repairs, compared to a 5.5% segment average. Among SUVs, the Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross came in under 2.5%, versus a 7.8% average. Among trucks, the Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma stayed under 4%, compared to a 9.1% average.
Carfax attributes the pattern to a straightforward mechanical reality: fewer components and simpler systems typically mean fewer things that can go wrong over time. The rankings are based on documented repair histories rather than surveys or projections, giving dealers a data-backed reference point when evaluating reliability trends across makes and models.
