Longtime dealer advocate and former lawmaker, Marty Coates, is now leading the Carolinas Independent Automobile Dealers Association as it prepares for its 70th Conference and Expo July 31-August 3 in Myrtle Beach.

Coates was named the CIADA Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer in June, after serving various roles in the association, including as acting executive director since August 2024.

“I’m honored to join CIADA at such a pivotal moment in the association’s journey,” Coates said. “Our industry is navigating a dynamic landscape — marked by evolving compliance demands across the Carolinas and rapid technological advancement, reshaping how we do business. I look forward to collaborating with our Executive Committee, valued industry partners and dedicated dealer members to strengthen our community. Together, we’ll continue to deliver innovative, relevant services that remain firmly rooted in CIADA’s mission — a legacy over 70 years strong.”

As the associate executive and acting executive director, Coates developed the growing mid-year dealer conference, Fast and Furious Dealer Training Experience, and led this year’s member campaign drive, in which the CIADA led all associations in attracting new members. He also helped with recovery efforts and obtained assistance for dealers impacted by Hurricane Helene.

“We are proud to have him leading the team,” said CIADA President Dean Canty. “Marty has brought a lot of excitement to the CIADA and pointed us in the right direction. He’s turned the membership numbers around. He helped get generators and pass out water after the hurricane. He’s just stepped up in so many ways.”

A four-time recipient of the NIADA coveted Silver Eagle Award for recruiting new members, Coates has led dealer training and continuing education for dealers as a contractor with the CIADA and produced multiple online continuing education products.

A former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2000 to 2006, Coates brings expertise in advocacy, contributing at the state and federal levels on behalf of dealers. He was named the CIADA Legislator of the Year in 2005 during his time in office after helping enact pre-licensing legislation.

Along with his work with CIADA, Coates has more than 30 years of experience as a business owner and corporate executive. He is a best-selling author, publishing seven books, including his automotive series “Race to the Finish.” He served with distinction in the U.S. Army, earning the Bronze Star for his service during Desert Storm.

Coates was awarded The Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in South Carolina.

Coates will greet dealers at the CIADA’s 70th annual Conference and Expo at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort, July 31 to Aug. 3. The conference will feature education focused on what’s next for independent dealers, a large expo featuring business solutions for dealers and the 2025 Awards Dinner.
