General Motors has issued a voluntary recall for nearly 600,000 vehicles equipped with 6.2L V8 engines.
The recall is for 2021-24 models of the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL equipped with the engine.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notice, GM issued the recall because “the connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.”
The NHTSA noted that the engine failure increased crash risks as the vehicle loses propulsion. Prior to failure, the NHTSA states drivers may notice a knocking, banging or unusual noise, the check engine light illuminating, or engine issues such as hesitation, high RPMs or abnormal shifting.
The NHTSA Safety Recall Report shows GM’s investigation included 28,102 complaints about the engine failure and 14,332 allegations of propulsion loss. GM also identified 12 potentially related crashes causing 12 injuries.
GM shared a statement with NIADA on the recall.
“GM will voluntarily recall certain 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models equipped with 6.2L L87 engines to resolve manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible,” the statement read.
GM added that owners of the impacted vehicle can take it to a GM dealer for an inspection and repair. If necessary, the engine will be repaired or replaced. Vehicles passing an inspection will be given a higher viscosity oil, a new oil cap, an oil filter and an update to the owner’s manual. All repairs will be free of charge.
GM plans to begin informing vehicle owners of the recall by June 9. Owners are asked to visit gm.com/service and enter VIN number for recall information.
