The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade held a markup session February 10 to review a group of legislative proposals, including two measures supported by NIADA.
A markup is a committee meeting where members debate, revise and vote on bills before potentially moving them forward in the legislative process.
During the session, H.R. 5221, the Preventing Auto Recycling Theft (PART) Act, was unanimously approved by voice vote without any amendments. The bill aims to tackle the escalating issue of catalytic converter theft by creating a national framework to deter and address this type of crime.
The committee also advanced H.R. 1566, the Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair (REPAIR) Act, again by voice vote. Although several members proposed amendments, those amendments were later withdrawn in favor of collaborating with the bill’s sponsors and the Subcommittee Chairman to refine the bill. The REPAIR Act is designed to guarantee that vehicle owners and their chosen repair professionals have access to essential motor vehicle data, repair information and tools, and are free to choose where and how their vehicles are serviced.
Both bills are now set to be considered by the full House Energy and Commerce Committee in the coming weeks.
NIADA members met with lawmakers in September, discussing both bills during the NIADA Policy Conference.
