More than 8.8 million U.S. vehicles were recalled in the third quarter of 2026, bringing year-to-date recall volume to 32.1 million vehicles, according to BizzyCar’s analysis of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data.

The quarter’s 85 campaigns made it the highest-volume third quarter in the report’s five-year window, though totals came in below Q1 and Q2 2026. The year-to-date figure already exceeds full-year totals for 2022, 2024, and 2025, trailing only 2023’s 33.6 million. BizzyCar updated the report October 16 to incorporate additional Q3 recall data released by NHTSA.

Chrysler accounted for about 3.4 million recalled vehicles (38.6%), and Ford for about 1.9 million (21.5%). Ford led in campaign count with 19. Back-over prevention systems, such as rearview cameras, made up nearly 23% of affected vehicles, followed by electrical systems and seat belts. The largest single recall covered about 1.27 million Ram 1500 pickups for improperly installed seat belt buckle anchors.

Five campaigns covering 519,187 vehicles carried “Park Outside” advisories. About 77% of recalled vehicles required dealer remedies, while over-the-air-eligible remedies rose to 14.7% of volume, up from 3.1% in Q2.

For independent dealers, the findings underscore the importance of checking incoming inventory for open recalls and coordinating needed remedies with the appropriate manufacturer’s service network.
