Goods imported into the U.S. costing less than $800 will no longer be exempt from duties as of Friday, Aug. 29.
An Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump in July announced the suspension of the “de minimis” tax exemption. Tariffs will now be placed on items based on their country of origin.
With the end of the de minimis tax, European shipper DHL Parcel Germany and some other delivery services in Europe announced this week they were suspending deliveries to the U.S.
“Due to the new customs regulations under the Executive Order “Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for all Countries,” which will take effect on August 29, 2025, there will be temporary restrictions on postal goods shipping to the U.S. for private and business customers in Germany,” DHL announced in a press release. “Key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out.”
