Government shutdown ends

President Donald Trump signed a bill into law Nov. 12 to end the longest government shutdown in modern history.

The bill cleared the Senate and the House of Representatives earlier in the week, bringing an end to a stalemate after 43 days.  The U.S. Senate passed the bill by a 60-40 vote margin with the support of nearly all of the chamber’s Republicans and eight Democrats.  The final vote in the House was 222 to 209, with six Democrats and two Republicans crossing the aisle to end the funding impasse.

The agreement funds most of the government through the end of January 2026, and sets up a December vote on Affordable Care Act subsidies, a COVID-era tax benefit that affects approximately 24 million Americans.  The agreement does not guarantee the subsidies will continue.
