Government shutdown nears end

The longest government shutdown in U.S. history is nearing its end.

On Monday, the Senate passed legislation to reopen the federal government after eight Democrats joined Republicans to break the impasse.  The measure passed by a vote of 60-40, with one Republican voting no due to objections over a policy provision included in the bill.

The legislation now moves to the House of Representatives. It was expected to be voted on Wednesday.

The package includes three full-year appropriations bills, provides full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program through the end of next September, and extends short-term funding for the rest of the government through January 30.

The funding agreement excludes an extension of the Affordable Care Act subsidies, a key point of contention for Democrats and the main trigger of the shutdown, after Republicans refused to continue the subsidies beyond this year.
