With more consumers turning to AI for assistance in their car-buying journey, CarMax announced this week that it is launching its own app with ChatGPT.

CarMax is the first auto retailer to debut a ChatGPT app, which will allow consumers to buy vehicles through the platform and also get offers for selling their vehicles.

“Used car shopping online can often feel overwhelming,” explains Diane Cafritz, CarMax Chief Innovation & People Officer. “By bringing CarMax’s nationwide inventory and shopping tools into ChatGPT, we’re giving customers a simple, reliable way to explore their options within a platform they are already using. This integration is another step in making the car-shopping experience more seamless than ever before.”

The integration will allow consumers to search CarMax’s inventory utilizing generative AI and its conversational tone to find their vehicle preferences – models, features, mileage and prices. Sellers will be able to ask about their vehicle’s value and receive information about CarMax offers on their make and model.

CarMax joins auto marketplaces AutoTrader and CarGurus, who have previously launched apps on ChatGPT.

Cox Automotive’s Car Buyer Journey study of 2025 data found that 19 percent of vehicle shoppers utilized AI tools in the buying process and more than 80 percent of 2,300 consumers polled expected AI to reshape how cars are bought in the next 10 years.
