SNAP benefit payments remain in question as government shutdown lingers

As the government shutdown continues, there’s uncertainty about whether and when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients will receive benefits.

Two federal court orders required the Trump administration to continue funding the SNAP payments during the shutdown. The administration initially agreed to allocate $4.65 billion in emergency funds to partially support the program but informed the courts that implementing the payments would take several weeks.

Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that SNAP benefits would not be distributed until the federal government reopens.

Later on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration was complying fully with the court order and would use contingency funds. She said it would take some time.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, roughly 41.7 million low-income Americans rely on SNAP benefits each month to meet their nutritional needs. Eligibility is determined by state qualifications.
